Don’t Get Caught in a Scam, Sam!

IF you get caught in a SCAM – Do not be embarrassed! It is a BIG CLUB! Tell the police and your relatives what has happened.

-Don’t Get Caught in a SCAM, Sam! by Dr. Ross L. Riggs, Director SCI; Retired Chief of Police LPD and author of the Ministry Minute!

THERE ARE WAYS YOU CAN GET ON THE OFFENSE AND AVOID TROUBLE!

People who are seeking a way to get your personal information or force you into giving them money are watching for certain clues that they believe will make it easier for them to get what they want from YOU!

BECOME A HARD TARGET! Criminals are lazy! They want to take on the easy targets. burglar-comic

While I was travelling in Israel, persons in my phone contacts started receiving messages supposedly from me that I was stranded at Heathrow Airport in London and that I needed cash wired right away to be able to travel home. For those friends who knew I was somewhere overseas but not sure where, this was a real issue for them. Others, who knew my exact location notified me of the scam being perpetrated on my friends and helped put a stop to it. Thankfully, no one sent any money. Of course, most of my friends haven’t any money and those who do would never send it to me to get me back from overseas!  If you get such a message supposedly from a friend in need, TALK DIRECTLY to your friend BEFORE any money goes anywhere!

How many of us have received word that we have won a lottery overseas or some person has left us untold fortunes but it is in a foreign country? The people contacting us JUST NEED OUR BANK INFO to send us the cash! WOW! What a deal! Remember the old adage, “If it sounds too good to be true… It is.”bags-of-money

If ANYONE calls you and tells you they are LAW ENFORCEMENT and you are required to pay for an outstanding ticket or if you were enticed to buy prescription drugs by phone to get them cheaper and then the someone claiming to be the police CALL you…Well, let’s put it this way; I was a cop for a very long time and I NEVER CALLED anyone I was about to arrest! HANG UP on these people and call YOUR LOCAL POLICE. They will help you set it straight.

CALLERS who claim to be government or utility companies, MEDICAID or the IRS are NEVER who they say they are! HANG UP – Call your local police if these callers are trying to get you to give out information or pay them money!  dirty-dozen-irs-scam-1-780x439

IF you get caught in a SCAM – Do not be embarrassed! It is a BIG CLUB! Tell the police and your relatives what has happened.

If you are caring for a senior relative and they tell you that they have been scammed, PLEASE, remember it could happen EVEN to YOU! Don’t berate or belittle them. They feel bad enough already! Take care of them with love and grace.scam-call

SCAM and FACEBOOK an unholy attack

SCI has posted blogs and published articles all around the world and none have reported on so diabolical a scheme. This one is aimed directly at Christian communities, targeting pastors and their affiliated congregations. Church members have begun to see FACEBOOK posts that look pretty much just like their pastor’s FACEBOOK page. But now, on the page, is a heart wrenching plea “from the pastor” to help him and his family pay a looming debt. Recently, in NE Ohio where this was done, an elderly single lady in the church removed all but $3.00 of her life savings and completed the transfer to the “pastor” she loved, at least she thought the $4,000 would go to her pastor and his family. Instead it went into thin air. (The $3.00 was just enough to keep her account open.)    This lady has no family and the church to which she belongs is a very poor church financially. We are trusting God to help her regain her only means of support. Reports have been made with the local police, FACEBOOK, Western Union and IC3 will be contacted also.

If there are people, groups, churches, or businesses interested in helping SCI create a fund to help, we need to hear from you.

TAX TIPS – SECURITY ALERT

http://www.lifelock.com

Normally, the Ministry Minute is about ministering to others or getting closer to God for yourself so that you can comfort others with the comfort by which you, yourselves, have been comforted… and maybe that is what this is all about. I know some stories of folks who have lost everything by criminals masquerading on-line, sometimes as government officials. At tax time when many people are doing their taxes on-line, it is a very dangerous time, particularly for those who are not ‘computer literate’. If you are having difficulty or you know someone who might struggle or be an easy target for these scam artists, consider it your ministry to help them avoid becoming a victim to this horrible crime. So, with that in mind, I want to share with you about a company in which I believe. They have helped me and I trust that they can help you too. No, I am not a paid endorser, I get only the satisfaction of knowing that maybe this will help some of you if you listen and read carefully.

LifeLock, a company that I trust with all of my personal and business information has some great tips for all those who are concerned with cyber-crime and the identity theft that happens so easily through the computer. At tax time, LifeLock has some expert advice for its members. Here is the introduction they have and I would strongly encourage you to take advantage of their services whenever possible. It is definitely affordable and certainly less expensive than correcting the mess of identity theft, particularly if the bad guys have raised up large amounts of debt for you. Always remember that unless you remove personal information from your computer, such as when you are doing your taxes, leaving that information stored on there is asking someone to steal it from you. We have alerted you before that scams on the internet usually start when someone approaches you on-line and claims to be someone they are not and asks for information. Do not respond to requests for information from someone claiming to be with the IRS or whomever. You make contact with the IRS directly to see if someone is trying to steal your information. www.IRS.gov will get you to where you need to be. Here is what LifeLock has to say, please follow their advice and check them out as a company for your own protection before your retirement dreams become a nightmare.

Tax season is the time of year when people work diligently to fulfill their obligations to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). It’s also when aggressive identity thieves target unsuspecting taxpayers to steal Social Security numbers and fraudulently file tax returns and claim refunds.

Knowing how to manage your sensitive information and identify when you’ve been targeted can help proactively protect your identity.
