I have spent more than fifteen years traveling and living in Central and Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean. The vast majority of my time was spent in former USSR dominated countries now breathing the fresh air of democracy, republic style representation and the benefits of capitalism. I have heard first-hand stories of their lives under socialist rule. I challenge any person with an open mind to listen to those stories and not return to the U.S. with a new-found belief in American Exceptionalism and as capitalism being the best financial method for freely owning your own company, working your own way and making a prosperous life for your family. Does America have faults? Yes. Do the people I meet overseas who are under government provided “universal “ health care want it? Overwhelmingly NO. The facilities and equipment are antiquated, the doctors are ill-trained, the wait times for the most basic care is long and people of a certain age or disease are simply left to die. I don’t ask you to believe me, go see for yourself.
Now, let’s look at where the ‘social democrats’ or the ‘democratic socialists’ began their journey.
Eugene V. Debs was incarcerated a few times, once in a conviction upheld by the Supreme Court for inciting one of the deadliest and bloodiest strikes in America. His benefactors claim he is a martyr to the big money interests, his detractors see less of a man for the little people as a man out for himself. He ran for president six times. At the beginning, he was endowed with a million dollars from his father and a million dollars from his grandfather. This was in 1912 when the average yearly salary was $750.00 Yet, he claimed their poverty coming over as Alsatian immigrants. They obviously found capitalism to work for them!
Much like the millionaire congressmen and politicos of today who love to talk about their tough times as barmaids or factory workers, their family money lines their pockets much to their shame but not enough to refuse it. Debs would claim his party was not socialism but Christianity in action. Deb’s wrote a piece which Bernie Sanders duplicated in audio form, which said, “There was a time in my life, before I became a Socialist, when I permitted myself as a member of the Democratic party to be elected to a state legislature,” he later said. “I have been trying to live it down. I am as much ashamed of that as I am proud of having gone to jail.”
Socialist billionaires like Bernie Sanders are quick to decry capitalism but their bank accounts seem not to mind it. Joe Biden is right there as well.
According to another pro-Debs article, “more Democrats view socialism favorably than view capitalism favorably. This brand of socialism has its own obsession with manliness, with its “Bernie bros” and allegations by women who worked on Sanders’s 2016 Presidential campaign of widespread sexual harassment and violence.
The sexual assault allegation by Tara Reade against Joe Biden would have been laughed at by the political world of Eugene Debs, much as it is belittled and whitewashed by some media today. Biden may downplay Socialist branding more so than Sanders but the hallmark planks of the Democratic platform speak otherwise.
The good ol’ boys of the socialist unions have no problem with the exploitation of women. This was the same political camp and candidate for which Ocasio-Cortez worked willingly. In a USA Today front page article, before Bernie Sanders stepped out of the race, he claimed that Cortez would be part of his administration if he is elected. If she remains true to form, I fear the NY Socialist all for women’s rights will follow the money and sell her soul and her constituents so she can have the biggest and best apartment money can buy!
AOC credits the Democrats with ending slavery. Has she ever read, or had read to her, a history book? She recently claimed she wants the seat of one of the Republican incumbents in the House to be changed to RED! Great idea… but she obviously is unaware red is the color of the Republican party. Read, when you can what AOC believes Capitalism is. I’ve quoted it elsewhere so I won’t repeat myself. Twenty-nine years old and people think she has all the answers. Sadly, so does she.
Just when I was old enough to be sure I had all the answers, they changed the questions.
